ABA – What is it and why do we use it?
Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) is a scientific field of study that focuses on behaviour, specifically the principles of learning socially significant behaviour. ABA-based interventions are extremely helpful for children with autism or other related disabilities. Rather than changing the individual’s behaviour, ABA aims to assess the functional relationship between the behaviour within a given environment. When properly designed and monitored by professionals in the field, ABA seeks to develop socially acceptable behaviours as an alternative to problematic ones. The effectiveness of ABA-based interventions in autism spectrum disorders have been well-established in research. Children who receive early intensive behavioural treatment based in ABA have been shown to make substantial and sustained gains in memory, attention, language and communication, academics, increased independence with self-help skills, and social behaviour. Our certified Behavioural Consultants and Behavioural Interventionists use ABA strategies to design and implement behavioural plans that based on the individual’s unique characteristics and needs. Our program focuses on supporting the entire family to implement ABA strategies based on their priorities to help their child, sibling or other family member reach their full potential.
